A Fable of Another Kingdom
Once upon a time in a kingdom far away the people grew tired of their monarch and decided to get together and see if they could, by popular decree, cause the old king to step down. According to the laws of their land if enough of the people were in agreement they could choose a new king. And so it was. It then seemed quite natural that several of the populace would desire to become the ruler of this faraway but very powerful kingdom. Since there were many who wanted to be king a good bit of time passed while all who sought the job went before the people to put forth their qualifications and reasons why they should be king. There were so many that the people really became quite weary of all the bloviating. Nevertheless….
One of those aspiring to kingship was a well-heeled woman known to some as the “wicked stepmother” of Cinderella fame. Others thought of her as the Fairy Godmother. Confusing to say the least! In any event, many were her followers and many were the heated arguments for and against her ascension to the throne.
Another desiring kingship was a well-heeled man thought by some to be “Dennis the Menace” of comic book fame. One look at the pictures of young Dennis pretty much clinched the comparison! And all knew about Dennis and the menace he truly was. The “cute” candidate Dennis, true to form, was into everything, bloviated incessantly and clearly would do or say anything to ascend to the throne. Past behavior would seem to indicate Dennis was not all he appeared to be. But, many were his followers – however, none of those had lived as his neighbors.
Another who would be king was a man many thought of as Aesop. Although Aesop was thoughtful, quiet, wise and brilliant many thought him to lack the necessary chutzpah to lead this faraway country. After all, a king must look like a king, walk like a king, and quack like a king! Unfortunately, most everyone had different ideas about what that looking, walking and quacking should look and sound like. So, although well qualified, Aesop was thought to be more of a fable than a contender and his followers were not so many. Some onlookers of the international sort kept their fingers crossed as it would never do to have wisdom on any throne at any time in any kingdom.
Another of the many contenders was older and actually quite popular with those who could not tolerate the idea of either Dennis or Aesop and who failed to see the good in Cinderella’s stepmother. Some thought of this candidate as being of Barney Fife fame. But who could know? This kingdom was most definitely not Mayberry.
There were many, many more. The bloviating went on and on…. and goes on and on. It remains to be seen just what will happen to this once powerful and popular kingdom. Just what will the people do? Who really will be crowned as king and what will that king do to benefit the people and cause the kingdom to “shine” in a world of kingdoms? If only it were as easy as a fairy tale. One can only pray, watch, wait, and hope.

We need to pay attention to politics. Yes, I know, sometimes it is just sickening. However, it matters a great deal who gets elected and/or reelected. By our involvement we help make the law!
